Charles Bies

Born in Dar es Salaam in 1970, Charles comes from a long family history of carvers. His grandfather taught him the traditional art of carving and he has dedicated his life to carving, to help preserve his culture. He creates beautiful totems, including a style that is distinctive to the Makonde, the Tree-of-Life. Featuring intricately intertwined figures, and rising up to six feet tall, this totem tells stories about relationships between people, the land and animals or carries moral messages about social behavior.
