Hamedi Athumani

Hamedi Athumani

Born in 1955 in Northeastern Tanzanian to the Wazigua people, Hamedi left school at age 13 to learn carving from his father, a carver, farmer and herbalist. His work features Shetanis, East African spirits believed to influence people and the environment. Hamedi believes the first step in healing is to understand ourselves and our place in the world, and through his work, which fuses Shitani and stylized realism, he tells a story. His work has been exhibited regionally and at the biannual Dar es Salaam exhibition.
